How to Check Google’s Keyword Ranking (Complete Guide)

What position does your website have? And for what search terms does it really rank?

I created this comprehensive tutorial on how to check keyword rankings in Google since these are the two burning questions that every digital marketer has. There are three methods to verify a keyword’s position in Google, as you’ll see below. I’ll quickly discuss each of these approaches before outlining how to utilise Google’s own free tool (Search Console) to get the necessary ranking information. To help you follow along with the procedure, I’ve also attached screenshots of the tool. You’ll find further advice on how to quickly raise your sites’ Google ranking at the conclusion of this essay.

How to Check Google’s Keyword Rankings?

To find out how your keyword ranks in Google, you can use a keyword position checker tool or do a manual search.Google Search Console is a free tool to verify the position of keywords. The paid tools Semrush and SERPWatcher are used to verify the ranks of certain keywords.

1. Examining keyword rankings by hand

You can check your Google rankings by hand by searching for a keyword and scrolling through the results until your website shows up. However, this is the method for verifying locations that takes the most time, as described in this other tutorial on search engine position analysis. So, I don’t recommend checking the rank of keywords by hand because it’s a waste of time.

2. Checking keyword rankings using Google Search Console:

Google’s keyword ranking may be checked for free using Search Console. Additionally, it eliminates the need for any manual keyword research.

In the next part, I’ll go through the straightforward 5-step procedure for using Google Search Console to monitor keyword rankings for each URL on your website. It comprises the majority of this post. The average keyword rankings for each page on your site may be obtained using Search Console, one of the free Google SEO tools that Google offers.

3. Making Use of a Paid Tool to Monitor Keyword Positions:

Semrush is the most effective tool if you want to discover every term that your website ranks for. You can quickly see the Google rankings for your website and the keywords that are driving the most traffic to it with a few mouse clicks.

I am an affiliate for Semrush since it has over 50 features in one application and is my third favourite SEO tool. Despite being three times as expensive per month as SERPWatcher and SE Ranking, it is on a completely different level. Semrush is available for free use here. You can use the Organic Search tool to discover all of the terms a site is ranking for in Google without having to manually enter them, as you can see in the photos below. The Position Tracking tool may then be used to keep track of the ranks for certain keywords. If you’re seeking the most practical solution in a keyword rank monitoring tool, these features will save you a tonne of time.

How can I find the Google page rank of my website?

In this section, you’ll learn how to use Google Search Console to verify keyword position.

Any website owner may use Search Console, a free service, to see how their website ranks for certain keywords on Google. It’s also the most accurate technique since Google is the one monitoring the data.

However, keep in mind that Google Search Console only enables you to see where your website ranks for a certain set of terms. You cannot use it to track specific keywords, monitor your competitors, or look for backlinking opportunities.

To complete those tasks, you’ll need a costly tool, such as SERPWatcher or Semrush, as I previously mentioned. Now that we’ve explored Google Search Console, let’s look at how to monitor the keyword placements for your website.

  • Install the Google Search Console first.
  • Log in to your Google account first. Visit Google Search Console next.
  • Insert a property (i.e., your website domain). The next step is to authenticate your website. There are numerous techniques to verify:
  • adding HTML code to the website’s head tag.
  • transferring an HTML file to your primary domain.
  • confirming the website with Google Analytics.
  • updating your domain name provider’s DNS records.
  • It may take up to 30 days after Google Search Console is installed and operational for sufficient data to be recorded so that you can determine where your website ranks on Google. So be patient.

Go to the Performance Report:

Go to the Performance Report tab in Google to track keyword ranking.The left sidebar is where you’ll find it.

When you enter the performance report, a dashboard with four boxes at the top and a graph underneath them will be visible.

To activate the boxes marked “total clicks,” “total impressions,” “average CTR,” and “average position,” click on each one (for keywords).

You can see a line for each of the four pieces of data over the last three months on the graph below the boxes. By clicking on the phrase “Date: Last 3 months” and changing the dates, you may extend or shorten the time frame.

Note:

Shortly after this post was published, Google updated the look of Search Console. Even if the colour style has changed a little, the features and functionalities for examining keyword ranks have not changed. I’ll eventually add fresh screenshots to this site. But for now, simply be aware that you may still adhere to this guide without having any trouble obtaining the necessary information.

View Your Website’s Top Searches:

A graph and table are both below. There should be no need to pick the “Questions” tab. If it isn’t, click “Queries” to see the query information (i.e., keywords).

You may see a list of the top keywords for which your website is now ranking in the first column of the table. This comprises all of the domain’s keywords.

By altering the “Rows per page” value to 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, or 500 queries, you may modify the number of keywords that show in the list.

The left and right arrows may also be used to navigate the list.

Research your website’s Google rankings:

The position column is located in the table’s last column. This column displays your website’s position on Google for a certain term that is given in the query column.

To find out which searches are appearing in the top places and lowest positions on Google, click on the term “Position” to switch the position column between ascending and descending order.

Just remember that this information is a compilation of all of your website’s URLs. It has not yet been filtered by URL, but we will do so in the next step.

Find each webpage’s query in step four:

You must click on two items in the table to learn what search terms each site ranks for.

To begin, choose the “Pages” tab, which is located next to the “Queries” tab. This will change the table so that each URL on your website is displayed in decreasing order based on clicks. Under “Top pages,” the URLs are shown in the first column.

After that, click on the URL you wish to examine Google’s keyword rankings for. This will eliminate all other URLs, allowing you to concentrate on only one.

Return to the “Queries” page after completing the first two steps. The table will now be modified such that it just shows a list of keywords for that specific URL. All further URLs and their related keywords have been removed from the table.

Above the table, to the right of the “Date: Last 3 months” filter, a new filter has suddenly become visible. The URL you choose in the table is shown by this new filter. Simply click the X button to reset.

At this point in the process, you can look through the list of searches to see which keywords and positions the selected URL ranks for in Google.

By selecting the “Top queries” column heading, you may also organise the queries alphabetically. By selecting the “Position” column option, you can additionally sort the ranking position column in either ascending or descending order.

Limit Searches to a Particular Keyword:

  1. You may restrict the searches to just see occurrences of a certain term if you’re looking for a specific keyword that the chosen URL is ranking for on Google.
  2. This procedure step also serves to display all queries that include that particular term (i.e., short-tail, middle-tail, and long-tail keywords).
  3. To filter results for a certain keyword, use the following actions:
  4. To begin, click the three-line menu symbol in the table’s upper-right corner.
  5. Next, choose the “Top inquiries” checkbox.
  6. Third, enter the term you’re looking for in the “Filter by Top Queries” area. Additionally, make sure the left dropdown menu’s “Contains” option is chosen.

Following these actions, the query list will be updated to only display expressions containing the particular term. At any point, you may start scrolling through the list of keywords and applying the filter by clicking the “Done” button.

Simply repeat the preceding steps if you wish to switch the keyword filter to a different word or phrase:

  1. Select the icon for the filter menu.
  2. Look under “Top inquiries.”
  3. In the “Filter by Top Queries” area, enter a new term.
  4. You now understand the full procedure for utilising Search Console to discover where your website ranks on Google. To determine the placements for each keyword for any URL on your website, just repeat each step.

How much time does Google need to rank your page?

Google typically takes between one day and four months to rank your page. A new site with low authority may take at least four months to rank for a keyword, whereas an established site with high authority may rank a page in one day.

If your site has a high domain rating and is an authority in its field, a newly published page that is appropriately SEO optimised may rank right away.

When I press the publish button and submit the website to Google Search Console for indexing, for instance, some of my sites immediately appear on the top page of Google.

It will take a new website with a low domain rating and little authority at least 4 months to rank a page for a certain keyword. Even so, it can take as long as a year. This is due to the fact that it takes
